Why did you become involved with the ICE Program?
Mike Young and I have played pick up hockey for a while now. Not only is he a great hockey player, but he is also a great person. Mike gave me a call and asked if I would be interested in joining ICE given my affiliation with coaching youth and college athletes, along with some of my philanthropic endeavors. I jumped on it after I heard about the amazing benefits of the program for the students.
How have you seen ICE affect participating students?
I currently have Caesar as my mentor and he’s like a little brother to me. We talk about our love for hockey and work on academics over the phone. Our favorite times together are playing the claw machine to win stuffed animals for other ICE members. I have loved watching Caesar grow over the past couple of years. He struggled a bit academically at first, but after some of our important monthly talks and some fun events together, he has gained an important understanding of the gift of amazing education that ICE provides, all the while becoming a selfless, kind young man to his peers in ICE.
How has volunteering with ICE affected you?
The program has reassured me of the resounding importance of high level education for students in their developmental years. Not everyone is born into the same socioeconomic backgrounds, but education has the ability to change lives and I see it through the growth of all of the mentees in the program. Brad’s foundation has allowed for the incredible opportunity for students to shoot for the stars and have the opportunity to head on to prestigious high schools and universities.
Do you have any specific memories or stories that stand out?
My favorite ICE memory has been going to the zoo with the mentees. It was a beautiful summer day and we were able to get outside and see all of the amazing animals. The kids loved nature and being away from technology for a while, and so did I! We then played soccer afterwards in the LP field (not my best sport I might add, and I am very competitive) so the kids taught me a thing or two with footwork as I am normally the coach! So many amazing opportunities with ICE!
Do you have questions for Carla? The ICE Program appreciates all of our volunteers and we would love to hear from you. Please reach out!
