Why you became involved with the ICE Program?
I heard about the ICE Program through board members Allan Santizo and Sean Campbell who are my teammates on my men’s league hockey team at Johnny’s Ice House. After hearing more about what ICE does for the kids in the program I wanted to be more involved than just attending events. ICE was just starting up the mentorship program so volunteering was a great way to start getting more involved.
How have you seen ICE affect participating students?
I see them realize that if they put the time and effort into their schoolwork and with the help of the ICE Program, they can achieve whatever they put their mind to.
How has volunteering with ICE affected you?
It’s given me great happiness that the kids in the program want to do well to make their parents, us and everyone involved in the ICE Program proud. This is evident through our phone calls and our mentor/mentee quarterly outings.
Do you have any specific memories or stories that stand out?
When my mentee told me he was accepted to the boarding high school of his choice and was starting in the fall of 2017. It is a great school and I know he worked very hard to get into it.
